Watched teh memorial service. For those of us who are "of color", you'll understand when I say that was the BIGGEST BLACK FUNERAL I've ever seen. I'm so glad no one threw themselves on the casket; they probably would have bruised themselves (seriously? gold-plated bronze?)
On a serious note, there were some very poignant moments (weren't they all, you ask? not really). I missed a small bit while I was driving to work, so I missed Brooke Shields. I heard she was openly weeping through her speech.
Some things that really struck me:
The speech by Al Sharpton (I know, I know, I can't stand the man either). He's is SUCH an everloving blow-hard -- imagine my surprise when he came out of his mouth with a speech that actually made sense and told it like it was. The best part? Out of all the people there, he was the only one who addressed MJ's kids directly, in true Pastor fashion: "wasn't nothing strange about your daddy; it was strange what he had to deal with". O.o So, okay, he moved up 1/2 notch from the 7th circle of Hell in my book.
Paris Katherine: I seriously think the world will need to watch out for this little sistah. She was the last one that spoke, all of 11 years old. "Ever since I was born,
Daddy was the best father you could ever imagine and I just want to tell everyone that I love him and I miss him so much." Baby Jackson say what? I would also note that after Al Sharpton said his piece, she was the first of the family on its feet. You go, little girl.
Shaheen Jafargholi singing "Who's Lovin' You?". Many props to the kid for singing that in front of this particular crowd. I would have wet myself in spectacular fashion had I been the one.
That's all I can remember for now. If you can, go watch the highlights. It was good; I hope it was closure for the bajillion people out there -- aside from his family (who the world can now see OBVIOUSLY loved their brother to pieces) -- who are still mourning the loss.
